MoMA Modern Playhouse

I absolutely love things that come in boxes or kits. So when I first spotted this dollhouse in a box, I knew I had to mention it. Basically it's a cardboard set of six nesting boxes that can be configured any which way to create a hip abode. It also comes with eight pieces of punch-out furniture, and 12 removable vinyl decals. A modern paperdoll family can also be purchased as well. Although not the most intricate of dollhouses, sheer innovation makes it a winner. $19.99 from Chronicle Books.

This is the youthful companion to his original Handmade Modern book. $15.61 from Amazon.

Vintage Finds: Fisher Price Roly Poly Chime Ball

Apparently there have been several reincarnations of Fisher-Price's Roly Poly Chime Ball. I remember the one with the rocking horses and blue base, which was first produced in 1967. According to This Old Toy, there was also one with sailboats with a yellow base that came out at the same time. It wasn't as popular and was discontinued after two years. The srocking-horse one remained in production until 1985, when it was replaced by a slightly modernized version (which if you ask me, lacks some of the vintage charm of the older one). That one lasted until 1990, when they no longer became "roly poly" with the addition of an easy to grip ring. Alas, these 6" balls made lovely toys, making the most beautiful sounds when shaken. I am still hard pressed to find another toy more appropriate for a newly-mobile infant. Luckily, since so many were produced, they are still easy to find on auction sites at very affordable prices.
